Music Downloads Aren't Taboo Anymore

Almost everyone is downloading music nowadays. With the advances in technology, even CDs are dropping in popularity. Who wants to cart around a book of CDs when you can fit twice as many songs on an MP3 player that fits in your hand?

One of the biggest problems with music downloads is that people try to get them for free. Illegal downloads are one of the most serious problems that the music industry faces. Some people don't think it matters whether they get their music through illegal channels, but the problem has gotten so big that people who download pirated music are being prosecuted.

To keep yourself in the clear, and support the musicians you love, you need to make sure that the music downloads you get are legal. If you are unsure whether a certain site is selling music legally, there are some things that you can check.

The first thing to check is how long the site has been around. Pirating sites are usually shut down fairly quickly, or at least have a lot of problems keeping themselves going. If a site has been around for a long time, they are probably legitimate.

Also, check the names of the songs and artists. If the titles have a lot of misspellings and weird punctuation, the site is probably selling the music illegally. Scrambling the titles and names is an attempt by the person running the store to confuse people searching for pirated material. This is not usually very effective.

Something else you can check is the prices of the songs. If you've visited legitimate music companies, you probably have an idea of what music downloads cost. $.99 is a fairly common price for one song that has been out for awhile. If their prices are way lower than this, the music is probably pirated. If they are giving it away for free, you can almost guarantee it is.

Some people still don't see a problem with downloading music illegally. But there is something they never seem to think about. If the person running the website is unscrupulous enough to cheat musicians out of their paychecks, what might they be willing to do with your personal information?

Buying downloads through completely legal, well established channels not only protects the rights of the musicians, it also protects you. Buying music really isn't that expensive, and downloading it legally is still usually less expensive than buying a CD.

But the most important thing is that buying music legally keeps you out of trouble. You may think you're safe because "everybody's doing it" but there are hefty fines and jail time involved for those who are caught, and there is no way to know if you will be that person.

Find a music store that has been around for awhile and that offers downloads at good prices. Once you find a download store that you like, you'll be glad to know that the people who earned the money are getting paid, and that your MP3 is full of legal music.

American Idol Finalist Anwar Robinson Music Review

New music always excites me. I crack open the CD or watch the bar move as the download is delivered from my wireless. Today, I'm breaking down a new track from Anwar Robinson, called "Night's Hot".

The song is a perfect romantic ballad-like tune that draws you into the night. It has an earthy aphrodisiac quality that wafts around you like a fine perfume. Before you know it, you're knee deep in the mood of the song. Even after the song ends, you'll notice a lasting romantic state of mind.

Anwar blows out some great riffs...urban and earthy. The background vocals are smooth, sweet and sexy. Impressive from the first note, "Night's Hot" is mixed to perfection. The instrumentals are flawless and you get an old school soul vibe juxtaposed with Anwar's trademark style - polished and steamy. It's no accident that Robinson was a Top Ten finalist on Idol.

I need to comment on the production quality of this track. "Night's Hot" starts off with a catchy drum beat that anchors it's earthy ambiance. The background instrumental arrangements have heat, so put your headphones on and listen for all the little little nuggets weaving in and out.

After some checking, I found out that "Night's Hot" was produced by Bo-Ty Productions. The studio has been cranking out hits for a few years and recently decided to embrace the power of the internet. Tyrone Corbett and Robert Donzella have a catalog that would make any major label drool with envy. Just goes to show how much of an impact indie music labels are having on the music industry. Indie labels and music are putting major labels on notice when they produce quality music like "Night's Hot.

You can even download for free, but there are no guarantees that the free download sites will give you good quality and uncorrupted files. But if you are ready to pay just a small amount, you can rest assured that you will get safe files.

2. How often do you like all the songs in an album? Usually, you fall in love with one of the songs. Before opportunities to download unlimited songs online appeared, you would have had to buy the whole album to listen to that one song you liked. But now, you can make sure that your personal compilation has each and every song you love.

Gypsy Jazz Guitar - A One-Man Genre

Gypsy jazz guitar is a genre based on the music of Django Reinhardt, a guitar player who overcame a severe disability to become a legend in jazz music. Most people have heard music by the Quintet du Hot Club de France or one of the gypsy jazz groups devoted to its style of music. Born in the 1930's this group with Stephane Grapelli on violin, Django Reinhardt, Joseph Reinhardt and Roger Chaput on guitars and Louis Vola on bass, pioneered the concept of lead and rhythm guitar.

The group played popular jazz tunes of the time with Django and Grapelli alternating on the lead with the two other guitars playing rhythm and Vola playing walking bass figures. A drummer was never in the mix. They also wrote their own tunes, many of which have themselves become standards. Some of the group's compositions include blue Drag, Minor Swing, Djangology, Django Rag, Django's Blues, Django's Tiger and Nuages.

The group's violinist, Stephane Grapelli continued making music until his death in 1997 but the figure that has proved to be the inspiration of many gypsy jazz groups, Django Reinhardt only lived to be forty-three years old. Gypsy jazz has been behind the popularity of the Maccaferri and Selmer style guitars. The guitar that Django Reinhardt made famous was made by the Selmer company in Paris based on a revolutionary guitar design by Mario Maccaferri, one of the first generation of classical guitar players. Surprisingly, Maccaferri was never familiar with Django Reinhardt's music.

As with all music associated with the tag "gypsy" the music is usually passed on directly from one musician to another. The Quintet Du Hot Club came out of an environment where playing music was simply a part of life. Each musician was both student and teacher. And there were not too many note readers among them. In fact Stephane Grapelli, a classically trained musician used breaks in the groups playing schedule to tutor Django in music. So every guitar player wanting to learn to play gypsy jazz is faced with learning the music of Django Reinhardt, as played by Django Reinhardt.

One element that made Django's music unique was the fact that, due to an injury in a fire, Django played the guitar using only the first and second fingers of his left hand. This limited the range of notes available to him as he worked his way up and down the fretboard was severely limited. As a result of his injury, barre chords are not found in gypsy jazz guitar music. A close look at Django's music will tell you he had little use for sevenths in his music.

If you want to listen to some contemporary gypsy jazz guitar, American groups devoted to the genre are Pearl Django and the John Jorgenson Quintet but Europe is still the place where there is most interest in this music, with groups like Hot Club of Hungary and Hot Club of France. If you want to learn to play gypsy jazz guitar, the ability to read tab would be a minimum requirement because there are many examples of Django's music available as guitar tab.

Play Popular Music on Guitar

Lots of people can play guitar but what music do you play on your guitar when somebody says, "go on, play something"? Do you play a song, an instrumental, a simple classical piece? Songs are probably best as a general rule because even if you can't sing, somebody in the crowd will be able to help you out. Just in case you get the party started with your guitar, a repertoire of around twenty songs probably should get you into, and out of trouble.

Your fingerpicking skills will come in handy if you want to impress a crowd of friends. The best thing about that is that you don't have to be a virtuoso. Just the barest minimum of fingerpicking breaks or short solos in a song will impress the average Joe or Joelene greatly.

Here's a few suggestions from a wide range of artists and genres. "Feel" and "Angels" by Robbie Williams, "American Pie" by Don McLean, "From the Beginning" by Emerson Lake and Palmer, "Cecilia" by Simon and Garfunkel, "Feelin' Groovy" by Simon and Garfunkel, "Blowin In The Wind" by Bob Dylan, "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell, "More Than Words" by Extreme, "Under The Bridge" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles, "House Of The Rising Sun" by The Animals, "Wild Thing" by The Troggs and "Runaway" by The Corrs. These are songs that everybody in the world knows the words to, or at least they can fake it.

Some artists that are always popular at singalongs are James Taylor, Leonard Cohen and Greenday. Oh, and maybe Suzanne Vega. Billy Joel's "Piano Man" and "Captain Jack" are songs that get a crowd going but maybe you need some vocal skills for those.

"Wonderwall" by Oasis deserves a special mention. The name was taken from the name of an album by George Harrison, and the song was the subject of speculation regarding who was in the thoughts of the composer, Noel Gallagher when he wrote it. All that aside, "Wonderwall" has been covered by lots of artists and everybody loves it. It's the kind of song that unites strangers from all over the world.

When you are choosing your repertoire, you can spread your net wide. No need to stick to the Top Forty, go for the Top One Hundred of whatever decade you feel comfortable with. An easy way out that does not need too much research is to just jot down a bunch of Beatles titles. You can be as basic or as flashy as you like because the songs stand up by themselves with just basic accompaniment or you can use any of the classical guitar style arrangements that you can find in music shops. "Blackbird" and "Hey Jude" would be a good beginning and finale.

You might want to think about an instrumental piece to continue the mood once the singing has died away. "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams might be a little challenging if you don't think of yourself as a "real" guitar player but it is surprisingly easy to play.

Of course if you are not likely to be playing for strangers, you will have some idea of the kind of music your friends like, so just let their tastes be you guide with a little of your own style thrown in.

There are also songs that maybe should not be played. "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton, "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple and "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles are contenders for this list but that probably only applies if your audience is sober.
